Frequently Asked Questions

How long does therapy last?

Each session lasts fifty minutes and takes place at the same time each week. The length of the therapy process itself varies according to the individual needs of the client. For some this might mean a limited number of sessions, agreed upon in our initial consultation. This might suit people who are coming with a specific difficulty of a recent nature, who are looking for time-limited, focused counselling. Others may have emotional difficulties that have troubled them for some time and can be helped with longer-term psychotherapy. It is long-term, regular sessions that provide the possibility for working on a deeper level to bring about long-lasting change.

How much does it cost?

Our initial consultation is free of charge. The fee for a fifty minute session is £100.

What kind of therapy do you offer?

I trained as an integrative psychotherapist, which means that I draw from several theoretical perspectives to help a client in a way that is most meaningful for them. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy and instead, recognise that every client is individual in their needs.

My own theoretical integration combines psychodynamic and humanistic ways of working. The psychodynamic approach explores the way in which our past experiences are, often unconsciously, informing and shaping our present. It enables clients to identify unhelpful behavioural and emotional patterns and provide the opportunity for new choices to be made. Humanistic therapy subscribes to the belief that we are all capable of growth and positive change when given access to the right supportive conditions. This form of therapy is client-led, empathic and non-judgemental.

What are the first steps?

The first step is to get in touch via email or the contact form on my website. You can provide as much or as little information as you choose, but it may be helpful to let me know a little bit about what you are looking for and what brings you to therapy. We will then arrange a free of charge telephone consultation, lasting usually around twenty minutes. This is a chance for us to connect and for me to understand a little more about what you might be looking for from the process. It is also a chance for you to ask any questions you may have. If it feels like you want to move forwards we can schedule in our first session together.

Do you offer online sessions?

I do offer online sessions, and I use doxy.me to provide secure, simple remote therapy. This service complies with HIPAA, GDPR, PHIPA/PIPEDA, & HITECH requirements. I have completed appropriate training in the ethics and practicalities of working with clients in this manner and follow BACP guidelines.

Who is therapy for?

There can be a myth around the idea that therapy is for those who suffer from mental health illnesses. Whilst therapy is commonly used to address mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, it can also be a useful space for anyone looking to foster positive change in their lives, and work upon improving relationships with themselves and others.

I’m nervous about starting therapy, is that normal?

This might be your first experience of therapy, and the uncertainty around what to expect can often feel daunting. The first step of reaching out can often be the hardest part. It is my aim to make you feel at ease throughout the process so you can explore what has been troubling you. The experience of talking with a therapist differs from talking to family, friends or loved ones; here you can say exactly what you feel without fear of hurting or upsetting those you care about. Experience shows that through the expression of difficult thoughts and feelings a situation can be better understood.
